I was flipping through some old photos of Montana, and came across this one. I took some creative license with this one and changed a couple of things in the photo. The parts that I I thought that would make a great painting, were the dynamic clouds, the golden fields, and the sun setting out in the distance.

My Top Five Thoughts List: Impasto with a palette knife

As this year ebbs out to a new one, I have been thinking of all the interesting encounters, mentors, and friends that I have made though out the year. I was fortunate enough to have crossed paths with these individuals.

I am thinking these thoughts as I reflect on this past year.
This year has forced me to analyze my work a great deal. What I like, and what I would like to change. As an artist progresses, and matures they find their own unique way of painting. As I sit here writing this mini memoir, I find, It's only taking me twenty years to realize this. I guess I should feel fortunate that I did think of it!

My Top Five Thoughts:

1. I'd like to think that, I am one those slow cooker artists that marinates in their own ideas of art, and becomes well seasoned over time.
2. I like to be challenged with change, and growth.
3. I don't think that it is realistic to think an artist will become an overnight success.
4. I do believe in hard work, and sticking with it, and hopefully becoming known with your peers.
5. I enjoy what I do, even if at times it can be hectic trying to squeeze studio time in with mom's taxi service, and a cranky husband ready for retirement.

So what have I learned this year? To enjoy life, my children, my cranky husband, and the process of making art. I like thick paint, and palette knives. For the last few months, I have been working in impasto, (thick paint), with a palette knife. I really enjoy the effects, and the freedom of a looser style. I am hoping that my art audience will enjoy this too!

Happy Thanksgiving! New Painting, " A Fall Day", and What I am Thankful For!

I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving, and Happy Holidays!
Recently, my ten year old daughter became quite ill with intestinal problems. A week of anguish has passed, and Alex is recovering! This is a major gift for our family this Thanksgiving!

New Ocean Painting Series

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I wanted to start a collective series of works pertaining to Southern California's coastline, primarily parts of Laguna beach.

I have fond memories as a child, walking California's rocky shores, feeling the spray of the ocean on my face, and picking up treasures the ocean decided to give back.

I'm not sure how many paintings will be in the collection, I'm hoping to paint twenty to twenty-five pieces. I will be using my typical limited palette of four colors. I like my paintings to be fresh, and show movement. So hopefully, this will translate into my work. All these paintings will be listed for sale in my open studio, just click on my painting tab on my website, so keep watching for new upcoming works.

I invite you to sit back, and enjoy your ocean view of the California coast !

A Family Makes an Artist

Kind of like the term it takes a village to raise a child. To me, It takes generations of family, and friends to form an artist.

I have been thinking about this for a while. What makes an artist? Artists in general come from such diverse backgrounds.

I have had the pleasure of meeting artists from all over the world. Some come from families that have generations of artistic influence, while others don't have any artistic parents or relatives.

Today, I would like to share a few of my very talented relatives with my thankful overgrowing audience.

Oranges-Sandra Yaras
1936-1997

My mother, Sandra Yaras was the oldest of the Yaras children. She was truly artistically inspirational to her children, and her siblings.

I was fortunate enough to have such a mother, while growing up in the 1960's. I remember sitting in her studio, watching her paint. She never scolded me when I would make additions to her paintings by adding a smiley face sun! I know that she played an important role in my art, and I do believe she was an influence in my uncle's film studio success.

Filmography

Some people do amazing things and don't get noticed! So today I am letting people know how talented my family truly is!
Back in the 1960's before computers, and the digital craze, my uncle started out working as a music and film editor for Hanna Barbara studios, and later for CBS. Decades of work, making sure Scooby doo, the "Flintstones", and other high profile cartoons, and TV shows were finished to air. I still have very fond memories of my grammar school birthday parties. I was fortunate enough to have my uncle show the newest releases of cartoons at my parties!

Patricia was born in San Diego California, and spent most of her young adulthood living in Southern California. She came from a background of art and music, and always knew that she wanted to be an artist. Her love for landscapes and seascapes has been heavily influenced by where she has lived through the years. Her painting approach is based on Impressionism, and Tonalism. Here's a new twist on Monet's Magpie. I was told to choose a Monet and try to duplicate the colors as closely as possible. Not an easy feat! This was done with a brush and palette knife.
Great study to show how differently everyone sees colors. All those critics out there be kind!

We have been having the most wonderful weather lately which is rare in Upstate NY. Usually we have thundershowers this time of year, we have been lucky for the past few days not to have any wet weather. I went out looking for something to paint yesterday, and discovered something interesting right in my back yard! There is a brook that runs through along side of my house which made a great morning Plein Air study. The name of the brook is,"Bloody Brook", which I think was named after a person. At one time the subdivision that my house is in use to be farmland.
The study is on a 9x12 canvas done in oil.
